Dreams

I dreamed about you last night
I dreamed you were alive
You walked into the room –  you said
Here – the rules do not apply

When sorrow bruises an open wound
And longing cuts deep and wide
Permission is hereby granted
To step across the great divide

Just who am I to thank?
He Who giveth and taketh away?
You smile gently – Do not resist
A humble soul gives sway

Jacob wrestled – and prevailed –
Dreams sustain the cosmic core
I open my eyes as morning breaks
All is as was before

Enkidu

There’s immortality they say
In a brushstroke, in a pen
So I offer the gods a blank page
To be with you again

The eternal quest of Gilgamesh
Spun from twines of grief
Ends at the tomb of man’s fair share
Unraveling as he weeps

If I could I would
Fill the Holy Grail, sumptuous and sweet
Pluck halos from the heads of saints
And lay them tenfold at your feet

Gospel or legend
It’s really quite extraordinary
The lengths one will travel for a friend

Remember Me

I have seen angels hover around the dying
Bestowing graces galore
As the river passes the Elm of False Dreams
Hold fast your coin and your oar
Spit the entrance fee
Into the faces of Grief and Old Age
Float free from the binds of Agony
Before the concrete and the familiar fade –
Remember me, remember me
Stand on the shoreline
With your back against the deep
The lovely, dark, and deep
And remember me, remember me
Let go all promises, true loves and deeds
And when I follow
Remember me

Does It Matter

Does it matter when you die
At eighteen, a life untried
Waiting for a miracle
A last divine hold on and pull

Let go
The three sisters won’t be bribed
They are deaf as well as blind
Every life to them is a life ill timed

Be at peace, you are the image of God
The resemblance can never fade
Nor memory be erased
Alike blameless and betrayed

What will it be like
When the moment arrives
Count backwards from ten
A silent terrifying requiem
